Instagram comment-to-DM is an automation: when someone comments a keyword such as LINK on your reel, a public reply goes under their comment and a private message with your link lands in their inbox. It needs a professional account and follows Meta's 7-day and 24-hour messaging rules.
"Comment LINK and I'll send it to you." You have seen the line under a hundred reels, and it works for a simple reason: the viewer asks for the thing, and it arrives a second later, instead of a "link in bio" they have to go and find. Here is how it works, the rules around it, and how to make it feel helpful rather than robotic.
How comment-to-DM works
- You set a keyword for a post or reel, such as LINK, GUIDE or PRICE, and say it in the reel and the caption.
- Someone comments the keyword.
- A public reply goes under their comment, such as "Check your DMs!", so everyone scrolling the comments sees it worked.
- A private message lands in their inbox with what they asked for: a link, a guide, a price list, a booking page, often behind a button they tap.
The same idea works without the comment: someone sends the keyword to you as a direct message, and gets an automatic answer.
The rules Instagram sets
Comment-to-DM runs on Meta's official messaging tools, and they come with rules worth knowing before you promise anything in a caption:
- A professional account. Messaging automation needs an Instagram business or creator account, connected to the tool that sends the messages.
- One private reply per comment, within 7 days. Meta allows a single private message in answer to a comment, sent within 7 days of it. Instagram attaches a link back to the comment the message answers.
- A 24-hour window after that. If the person writes back, you can keep the conversation going within 24 hours of their last message. Meta's extension to 7 days is for a human agent answering, not for automated messages.
- Limits and spam rules. Meta caps how many private replies an account can send in an hour, and its platform policy forbids unsolicited or unrelated messages. The keyword is what makes the message invited: send exactly what the post promised.
Choosing the keyword
- One short word, in capitals. LINK, GUIDE, RECIPE, PRICE. Capitals make it stand out in the caption and easy to type.
- Specific to the post. Avoid everyday words like "yes" or "love", which people write anyway.
- Say it and show it. Mention it in the reel and repeat it at the end of the caption.
- Decide how strict to be. An exact match avoids false starts; a looser match catches "link pls". On a post built entirely around the giveaway, answering every comment can make sense.
Writing the two replies
The public reply confirms it worked and invites more comments. Keep it short: "Check your DMs!", "Sent, enjoy!" Write a couple of versions so a busy comment section doesn't read like one line copied fifty times.
The private message delivers, and does nothing else:
- One sentence that says what this is ("Here's the guide you asked for").
- One link or button.
- At most one line of context, such as what's inside, or how to get the next one.
Leave the hard sell out. The person asked for one thing; a message that gives it to them builds the trust that sells later.
What to send
- A guide or checklist that expands on the reel.
- The product or shop link for the thing on screen.
- A price list or menu, for a business answering "how much?" all day.
- A booking or sign-up page, for coaches, classes and events.
- The full video or episode the short reel was cut from.
Mistakes that make it backfire
- A keyword nobody can see. If it is only in the caption's last line, most viewers miss it. Say it in the video.
- A broken or slow link. Test it on a phone before the post goes up.
- Sending something else. A comment for a guide that gets a sales pitch loses the follower.
- Nobody watching the replies. When people write back with questions, answer them yourself. That is where comments turn into buyers.
Setting it up in ReelFyre
ReelFyre makes reels from your long videos and posts them, and its Instagram DM automation handles what comes after:
- Attach it as you schedule. When you book a reel on the calendar, attach an automation for its comments. It waits for the post to go live, then starts answering.
- Comments or DMs. Send a message or link when someone comments a keyword on your post, or answer a keyword someone sends you by DM with a helpful reply, price list or link.
- Choose the words. List the keywords that start it, add words that should never trigger it, or answer every comment.
- Preview, then test. See how the conversation will read, send one test message, and turn it on when you are ready. Pause or resume automated messages at any time.
- Hand-overs. When a conversation needs you, automation pauses for that person and ReelFyre lists it for you to answer in the Instagram app.
Once the replies are flowing, the next question is which reels earn them. That is what Instagram Reels analytics, explained covers.

Questions people ask
Is comment-to-DM automation allowed on Instagram?
Yes, through Meta's own messaging tools. A professional account can send one private reply to a person who commented on its post or reel, within 7 days of the comment, and Instagram links that message back to the comment. Meta's rules still apply: messages must be what the person asked for, never spam.
How long after someone comments can I send them a DM?
Up to 7 days, and only one private reply per comment. If they write back, a normal 24-hour window opens: you can keep messaging them within 24 hours of their last message.
Do I need a business account for comment-to-DM?
You need an Instagram professional account, business or creator, connected to the tool that sends the messages.
What if someone misspells the keyword?
Pick a short, distinct keyword and decide how strictly it must match. In ReelFyre you list the keywords that start the reply, add words that should never trigger it, or choose to answer every comment on that post.
Can people send the keyword by DM instead of commenting?
Yes. A keyword sent as a direct message can get its own automatic answer, such as a link or a price list, sent within Instagram's 24-hour window.
Can ReelFyre do this today?
Yes. You can start a free trial at reelfyre.com; connecting Instagram needs a paid plan, from ₹499 a month.
